SPM PM Assessment Award

SPM Cognitive PM Knowledge Assessment:      Application Deadline - January 31, 2010

The IT & Telecom SIG and SPM Group are happy to announce the sponsorship of a limited number of individual Project Manager personal assessments in 2010 at no charge to our membership. These assessments are valuable tools that objectively and confidentially evaluate your competencies and development areas on the subjects of application of project management and leadership. A series of on line questionnaires lead you through the process of a self evaluation which is then compared against the key skill sets and industry standards. Your personal scores indicate a lot about the way you manage both your projects and your teams. Take this opportunity to learn more about yourself in these areas and use that information to set your professional development goals for the coming year!

The first scholarship will be awarded early in February.

Through a set of over 100 questions, the SPM Cognitive PM Knowledge Assessment is an online tool that tests knowledge and understanding of project management principles, tool and techniques. These questions are based on mainstream best practices and the standards of project management with the primary ones from PMI's PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge), as well as general management and business specific questions.

The assessment questions cover the nine technical project management areas in addition to focusing on key leadership attributes.

  • Integration Management
  • Scope Management
  • Time Management
  • Cost Management
  • Quality Management
  • Human Resources Management
  • Communications Mangement
  • Risk Management
  • Procurement Management

The general management and business specific categories include:

  • Communications
  • Learning & Knowledge Management
  • Team Building
  • Negotiations
  • Planning, Prioritizing & goal Setting
  • Relationship Management
  • Strategic Thinking
  • Problem Solving & Decision Making
  • Time Management
  • Financial Acumen

Results of the SPM Cognitive PM Knowledge Assessment are analyzed confidentially against SPM Group's Competency Maturity Model PM Profile. This model represents the competencies we believe are required to successfully perform the best practices of the project management profession. The Maturity Model Profile defines the performance requirements for an individual applying current, certified best practices, in project management for the specified years of PM Experience and PM Professionalism the participant indicates on the assessment.

Individual Assessment Report:
The hyperlink to complete the Assessment is sent in an email to the individual. This link is specific to the participant and is hosted on the SPM server.
The results from the questions on the assessment are tabulated in a database then structured into a confidential Individual Assessment Report immediately generated for the participant.
The results are presented in a graphical and narrative report format that documents in detail the score for each proficiency and performance criteria. The report highlights an individual's strengths as well as areas that are in need of increased focus.

Scrum Alliance Webinar Series

The IT&T SIG, in conjunction with the Scrum Alliance, is very pleased be able to invite you to join us for a series of webinars aimed specifically at building a bridge between the Agile and PMI communities.

If you are a project manager working in IT or IS, chances are Agile has been knocking on your door for quite some time. The simple fact is that in technology today, there is no one true way to solve the problems we face. Sometimes, the waterfall is your friend and sometimes you need an approach better suited to a high risk, dynamic project with lots of unknowns. Scrum, has grown to be one of the most well known and highly adopted Agile practices. Scrum offers a low entry barrier and allows for increased feedback and acceptance opportunities. And above all, it is very accepting of change.

For the past few months the Scrum Alliance and the IT&T SIG have been working together to develop programming with the purpose of building a bridge across the unnecessary chasm and helping the folks on each side see the value of what the other has to offer. We want to increase visibility, reduce fear and animosity, and most of all, help the members on both sides recognize that they can become better at what they do, and increase their chances of delivering successful projects simply by learning more about how to use the best of what the other side has to offer.

Webinar Schedule

Recorded versions of the presentations are available to all visitors. Please join the SIG and/or log-in at the right of the page to access even more content and features.

UMT Scholarship Winners

PMI - IT&T SIG UMT Scholarship Awarded for 2008

Victor GrigorascuThe 2008 Fall Scholarship has been awarded to Mr. Victor Grigorascu.

Mr. Grigorascu is a senior project manager with European Computer Telecom, München, Germany.  Previously, he has held various leadership positions within the telecommunication industry and government.

Victor holds a PhD. in Automatic Control and Signal Processing and two academic degrees: Engineer in Electronics and Telecommunications and Law.  Bellow is how Mr. Grigorascu speaks about his relationship with PMI and IT&T SIG and what the UMT Scholarship means for him:

"I am very interested in PMI and IT&T SIG activities, and I welcome this opportunity to improve my knowledge, aiming at better contributing to my work and to my professional society.

I know through direct experience that PMI learning, volunteering and networking opportunities really help project people to grow professionally, in addition of providing a sense of belonging to a select professional community.
I had managed projects big and small for several years, encountering always the same problems: scope creep, systematic delays and difficulties to make the best of the available resources. And then, one day I learned about PMI and the PMBOK. The PMBOK gave me a better understanding of state of the art project management practices. I decided then to become a member of the PMI and work towards the PMP certification.

Through PMI, I discovered the Telecom & IT SIG. Indeed, while project management practices are of general application, industry insight and experience sharing with people having similar interests are a definite plus. I especially appreciate the webinars provided by the SIG. I intend to offer such a presentation myself one day, and I am interested in contributing to the Telecom & IT SIG publications. I also have a very positive experience with the SIG mentoring program.

In applying for this scholarship program, my main objectives are to get a better understanding of modern project management practices, and learn new skills. Also, I expect these courses to help me better prepare for the PMP Certification exam.

Pragmatic and motivated, I am confident I will make a good use of this scholarship, by integrating the tools and techniques learned through these courses into my professional expertise. This will also better prepare me for contributing to the PMI and IT & T SIG.

The courses offered by UMT are consistent with my interest in continuing education. Moreover, I think that online education is an invaluable complement to "classical" education in today's environment. Not only saves this time and fits into charged agendas, but also prepares for working with virtual teams.
This scholarship will be an opportunity to improve my knowledge, and become a better project manager. This will help me improve my job performance and will prepare me better for contributing to the PMI and IT&T SIG. "
