Mentoring Program

Mentoring Program Icon Corporate and Executive Mentoring Programs are a powerful means of cultivating individual's skills throughout an organization. The PMI IT & Telecom SIG Mentoring Program is directed toward improving project management professionalism by providing mentoring support to individual members, organizations, and businesses around the globe.

This is certainly an exciting time for Mentoring Programs, as it is a self-rewarding experience to be able to be apart of a professional social network community which may help solve complex problems within your work environment, help advance your career path, help build your business, lead you to new prospects, or the interest in establishing a long term coaching relationship.

The mentoring program is designed as a one-on-one coaching, pairing Mentors and Protégés or Coaches and Protégés based on their areas of interest and other information provided to the Mentoring Program Manager. Once Mentors and Protégés have been paired, it is their mutual responsibility to determine a meeting schedule and a development plan for working together. IT&T SIG members wishing to participate in our Mentoring Program should contact Josh Lerner at the contact address depicted below.

REQUIREMENTS
All participants signing up must be members of the IT & Telecom SIG. Mentors must be PMP certified unless otherwise approved by the Mentoring Program Manager. Protégés may or may not be PMP's.

PDU's
All Participants (Mentors/Protégé's) who enroll in the PMI IT&T SIG's Mentoring Program can now potentially earn up to 10 PDU's per year. PMI has approved that participants in the Mentoring Program earn 2 PDU's per each hour they are engaged in the mentoring process, with a maximum of 10 PDU's per year. That is a total of 30 PDU's in a given 3 year cycle!

MENTORING VS COACHING
What is Coaching?
Coaching can be defined as a personal and confidential learning and development process. It is goal orientated - the person being coached (the coachee) will have defined what they want to achieve from the coaching sessions; working to both short term and longer-term goals. Coaching is designed to result in effective action, improved performance, and/or personal growth for the individual and improved business results for the organisation. Coaching differs from other forms of organised learning, e.g., training, as it is individualised and recognises that no two people are alike. Coaching is based upon the theory that each person has a unique knowledge base and learning pace and styles, and therefore, coachees progress at their individual pace.

What is Mentoring?
Mentoring is a process during which one person (the mentor) supports and encourages the longer-term learning, development, and thus performance improvements of another (the mentee). Within the corporate environment it describes a guide, or adviser, - normally a senior manager who helps someone organisationally more "junior" to develop their capability and potential. The mentor's experience and credibility are vital, - it's someone who has been there, seen it and done it - and, if there is something they haven't done, then they know someone who has! The mentor does not tell the other person how to do it, but guides them to a decision through appropriate questioning, encouragement and relevant examples from their own past.

Since April 2008, we have begun to collect your Registration Forms and Resumes, to register in our Program as either a Mentor, Protégé or Both roles. During the 2nd qtr. of 2008, our steering committee has selected a handful of participants to be included in our 2 month Pilot, which will occur during the months of May and June. If you have not yet registered, please do so now, as the cutoff date to register for the 2008-2009 program is June 30, 2008. If you have already submitted your Registration form and Resume, as per the instructions on our website under the Registration process, there is no need to submit this again.
