Abstract: Arup is an international multidisciplinary consulting engineering firm with a staff of more than 7000 professionals working out of more than 70 offices around the globe. This presentation will discuss how Arup uses technology (Internet, Intranet, & Extranet tools) to share knowledge, skills, and industry best practices around the globe. The presentation will discuss the challenges and opportunities of working globally and provide real world examples of how Arup is using technology to manage and deliver large complex projects around the globe.
Presenter: Al Lyons
Presenter Bio: Al Lyons leads the information technology and telecommunications consulting practice at Arup in NY. Arup is an international multidisciplinary consulting engineering firm with a staff of more than 7000 professionals working out of more than 70 offices around the globe. The NY office was established 13 years ago. It has a staff of 250+ people and presently provides a full range of engineering and technical consulting services. Al has 25+ years of experience in the design, installation, operation, maintenance, and management of all of the technology systems typically found in the built environment. For the NY Chapter of BOMA he serves as Chair of the Telecommunications Task Force, Co-Chair of the Security Task Force, and Chair of the Renovated Building Sub-Committee of the Pinnacle Awards Committee. Additionally, he is actively involved with the American Council of Engineering Consultants (ACEC), Airports Council International (ACI), and several other industry organizations. Al is presently helping several clients build facilities and organizations that will readily support current, emerging, and anticipated technology requirements. Al received a BS from Cornell University’s College of Engineering in 1979 and an MBA from New York University’s Stern School of Business in 1987. He has written several articles about the integration of technology into built environments and frequently lectures on the topic.
Presenter: Gordon Lland
Presenter Bio: Gordon Lland is a Director of Arup Communications London providing Information and Communications Technology (ICT) consulting on major projects. He sits on the group executive, is a member of the Arup global aviation business network and is a major contributor to the group's initiatives in the corporate and healthcare sectors. He leads and co-ordinates the ICT skills development network.
Gordon has extensive experience in the planning, design and delivery of major ICT projects for both public and private sector clients. The work ranges from initial feasibility studies through all aspects of design to project commissioning.
Gordon was awarded a BSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Queens University Belfast and an MSc in Information Technology from Cranfield University. He is a Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and is a Chartered Engineer.
Presenter Richard Tregaskes
Presenter Bio: Richard has over ten years international experience as a Communications Systems, and Technology Consultant with significant experience project managing integrated systems design for transport and transit systems handling 60M passengers a year. Richard has experience in project managing multi-disciplinary consulting teams, spread across multiple time-zones.
Richard Currently leads the IT & Technology Consulting team in Arup Los Angeles. In this role Richard is responsible for the delivery and technical quality of all It & Technology related projects.
Richard was awarded a Bachelor of Engineering In Electrical Engineering from the University of Southampton, and a Master's in Business Administration from the Open University. Richard is a Chartered Engineer with the Institute of Engineering & Technology and a Member of the Chartered Management Institute.
Presenter: David Powell
Presenter Bio: David Powell has over seventeen years experience as Team Leader of Controls and Commissioning Group, Arup.
David Powell has extensive experience in the commissioning management and activation processes required for airports and airport services having successfully managed the commissioning process on three major airport projects.
David has extensive experience in the specification of systems, including performance, procurement, and commissioning issues, including the $1.4 billion, 1.5 m sf JFK Terminal 4 and the CD$4.6 billion, 3m sf Pearson International Airport in Toronto.
As part of the delivery processes of the airport projects undertaken, David has led the development of a suite of commissioning management and activation tools called eFAST. eFAST is a web based management system that automates and track progress on the many commissioning and activation activities required to successfully place an airport into operations. This system is currently being further developed and implemented as part of the activation process for the expansion of Dubai International Airport.
David Powell also specializes in mechanical and controls system design, low voltage engineering including Supervisory and Data Acquisition, Security, Fire Alarm, and Information Technology. His duties cover the design, specification, equipment approval and testing and commissioning of building mechanical and control systems, including building management systems (BMS) for specific projects.
David's expertise lies in the integration of real time and IT building systems including the technical requirements for system integration coupled with the contractual and procurements routes necessary to achieve successful integration projects.
Presenter: Nicos Peonides
Presenter Bio: Nicos Peonides is an Associate Principal at the New York office of Arup, a leading international multi-disciplinary consulting engineering firm with over 7000 members of staff in 32 countries. He has extensive experience in the design, implementation and management of Building Automation, Communications/ IT-Systems and System Integration for a wide variety of complex international projects. These projects include among others airport terminals, railway projects, museums, concert-halls, archive buildings, sports complexes, laboratories, libraries and office buildings.
Mr. Peonides joined the London headquarters of Arup after having finished his Dipl.Ing/M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering with Specialization in Technical Cybernetics and Automatic Control Engineering in Germany. In 1996 he transferred to the New York office to develop a Building Automation/ System Integration team and to facilitate the development and implementation of global IT standards and systems. He is actively involved in the design and implementation of emerging technologies in airports, such as integration between the IT, building and business systems and wireless infrastructures and systems and currently leads the IT consulting team of Arup in New York.
In December 2006, Nicos completed an Executive Masters program in Management of Technology (MOT) at the Brooklyn Polytechnic University, 2006
Nicos has presented several papers on emerging technologies, intelligent buildings, wireless technologies, system integration and environmental control systems at national and international conferences.
Presenter: Tara Durnin
Presenter Bio: Tara Durnin has over twelve years experience in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Industry. She specializes in the areas of ICT strategy, systems integration, ICT procurement, infrastructure implementation and project management.
Tara was based in the Arup New York office for three years. During this time she worked on two of North America's largest Airport Construction Projects as Project Manager for the design, procurement and installation of the ICT Systems. This experience has helped Tara to become an expert in the field of Airport Systems Integration.
As part of her work, Tara has been responsible for supplier relationship management and contracting with subcontractors on multi-national projects.
Tara has learned through experience that effective communication is key to the success of the design and deployment of ICT infrastructure & systems. Her ability to communicate at all levels from board member to contractor/technician has greatly helped her to achieve the goals of her client organizations.
Tara has been awarded Cisco BSCI (routing) 640-901, Cisco BCMSN (switching) 640-604, Telecommunications Studies from the University of Westminster (London) and has a French Diploma from the Université International in Paris. She is a member of CITP - Chartered IT Professional,
FBCS - Invited Fellow of the British Computer Society, MIEE - Full Member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers, and MBCS - Full Member of British Computer Society and is currently based in Dubai.
